The extension
Your browser, wired to the app.
It watches the page you are on. A download that starts, a video that plays, a playlist the player loads: the extension shows it and sends it to PopMedia on your computer with one click, carrying the page’s cookies so logged-in sites work. The app does the downloading, then matches and files the result.
What it does
- Takes over media downloads the browser starts, above a size you choose. The browser’s copy is cancelled and the app fetches the same address with several connections and resume.
- Sees media on pages: a small button appears when a page loads a video file or a stream playlist. Click it to send.
- Right-click a link or a playing video: download it with PopMedia. Magnet links go to the app too.
- Pairs once with a six-digit code shown in the app. From then on it talks to the app on your own computer only.
What it does not do
- No site search, no catalogues of links. You bring the link.
- No DRM. Protected streams cannot be captured, by this extension or any other.
- Nothing leaves your computer. Links go to
127.0.0.1, to the app, with a token the app handed out at pairing.
Privacy, in full
The extension stores on your browser: the pairing token, your options, and the list of media it saw on the open tabs until they close. It sends to the app, and to nothing else: the address you chose, the page it was on, the page’s title, and the request headers the page used for that address, including cookies for that site, so the app can fetch what you could. The extension has no server of its own and reports nothing to us. The permissions it asks for: downloads to see a download start and cancel it when the app takes it; webRequest and access to sites to notice media as pages load; cookies to send the site’s cookies with a link; contextMenus, tabs, storage, notifications and webNavigation for the right-click entries, the page title, the token and options, the "sent" notices, and clearing the list when you navigate.
